Jamaica House

Jamaica House

The JAMAICA HOUSE: Extended Tupac Feature chronicles the club’s rise to fame (and infamy), uniquely mirrorring Shakur’s. The young Tupac, pre-Death Row Records, was a constant champion and supporter of the club, where he performed religiously. While ‘Pac is a central character of the documentary, the narrative unfolds through the eyes of the club's founding promoters who were the same age as Tupac. In 2016, the 20 year anniversary of Shakur's death, director Al Gragg (also a co-founder of the club), was granted new and unprecedented access to precious archive footage and never seen before interviews of Tupac and the club.

Jamaica House, 'the studio 54 of rap’, was L.A.'s biggest, longest running club of the 90s, founded by four boyhood friends. You venture behind the velvet rope in this chronicle of the historic nightclub, where Hollywood & hip-hop clashed at the famous Roxbury on Sunset Strip. The club sprang from the burgeoning nineties underground rap and reggae scene, giving birth to a new movement. Jamaica House was a flash point forged in cultural history, surviving gangs, drugs, and the L.A. Riots. This is a coming of age story for the boyhood founders, Shakur, the club, and golden era hip-hop. The main characters struggle with new money, new fame, and old demons, leading them all down parallel paths. Beginning with the purist notions of having fun while uniting a particular community, like 'Pac, the promoters were sucked into a volatile and often violent world where gangsta-rap and commerce collided. The film also features never seen before footage and interviews of The Roots, RUN-DMC, Notorious B.I.G., and NWA.
